If your local area isn’t currently making a Fun Palace, it’s not too late to get something going this weekend. In fact just yesterday evening someone added a 15 minute, online Fun Palace to the map, in which they’re inviting people to come along and share something that’s creatively inspired them recently. Which is just wonderful.
Some other ideas for Tiny Fun Palaces:
Inviting a few people along for a local walk. Perhaps invite them to try to notice things they’ve not noticed before. Share back at the end what people noticed. (Lots of Fun Palaces have featured walks and trails over the years.)
A mini at home skill share – invite the people you live with or a neighbour to share a skill for 20 minutes.
Get out the old photos, invite some others to do the same. Chat about them over a cup of tea and share stories. This could be done at home, or in a cafe, community centre, library or park. (Sydenham Fun Palace did this in 2024.)
Hosting a knowledge sharing hour, where you choose a topic then research it together. You could use the internet or local library resources. How much can you learn in an hour?
5 minute experts – invite a few people to talk and share for 5 minutes on topics they are expert at – this could be anything from ‘how to make perfect cheese on toast’ to a local history talk, to sharing fun facts about butterflies (that last one really happened in Redruth in 2024!)
Invite people over to watch an old movie, documentary or TV show. Perhaps go for something you’d never usually watch. Chat about it after. (Brockwell Lido watched Joan Littlewood’s ‘Oh What a Lovely War’ at their Fun Palace.)
Or something else that you’d like to do (because Fun Palaces really are yours!)
Once you know what you’d like to do, sign up on the map. If it’s just for you and a few people you know, make it Tiny to let people know it’s a private Fun Palace, and keep your actual location hidden (or make it a standard Fun Palace if you’d like other people to know they’re welcome to turn up.)
Signing up means you get counted in the Fun Palaces weekend of action, and play a part in showing, along with Fun Palace Makers across the UK that culture happens everywhere, belongs to everyone, and can exist right on our very doorsteps.
