Description

Chats Palace is a home for radical creativity and collective action. Since 1976, we’ve stood at the heart of our East London community—rooted in working-class culture and driven by the belief that art and education are powerful tools for social change. And our name is inspired by Joan Littlewood's concept of a 'Fun Palace' building - so it has all come full circle!

From our Grade II-listed venue, once Homerton Library and gifted to the people by Andrew Carnegie ‘for the betterment of East Londoners,’ we continue a proud legacy of protest, performance, and public dialogue. We champion those who are marginalised, excluded, or silenced—offering a bold, welcoming space where community voices are heard, injustice is challenged, and imagination fuels transformation.

What to expect

Our bar will be open from 10 am, with tea / coffee, refreshments, and board games available for all!

10:30 am - 12:30 pm in the Theatre

    A relaxed introduction to the Theatre for Social Change approach, using drama games and participatory theatre exercises to explore experiences, communities, and social change.

1 pm - 4 pm in the Library Bar

  • 🎨 ZINE MAKE® | LONDON ZINE SCENE
    There is an appetite for curating the unseen screenshots, photos, and image chaos that lurk on our devices. Zines allow for cognitive offloading and the ability to reveal ourselves and our digital world in a tactile way. Can we turn memes into zines to print and share?  Let's make zines together.  I'm Tristan Spill and I'll be introducing my free online ZINE MAKER app. I'll bring my portable printer so we can build mini-zines on the go.  I'm a recent fellow from Newspeak House, London College of Political Technology, faculty on the London School of Solar Punk and run the London Zine Scene instagram account.

    Have a wander through our corridor and celebrate 50 years of Chats Palace’s history in the community. It features unseen images by local photographer Neil Martinson from the first Hackney Marsh Fun Festival in 1974 up to images from the last ever Hackney Carnival in 2024.
