Linlithgow’s Seed Swap Fun Palace

At the end of a weird year in which many of us have re-discovered our gardens, we thought it might be nice to end the season (and look ahead to next year) by gathering and swapping our seeds.

Description

This Fun Palace is open to everyone in Linlithgow to be part of.

TO JOIN IN, YOU CAN:

a) Salvage a few seeds from the plants you’ve grown this year or dig out any leftover seed packets you won’t use. Pop them in an envelope (maybe label them or add simple instructions if you can), and hang them up somewhere public for people to take. You might hang them on your gate / fence, at a bus stop, from a tree branch, or anywhere else in town for others to take.

AND / OR

b) Head out for a stroll around town, find a packet of seeds, and re-home them to get you off to a head start next year.

(OR BOTH!)

HOW TO COLLECT AND SHARE YOUR SEEDS

Once a plant has finished flowering and started to die off, you can often see the mature seeds drying on the plant. Chives are really good for this, as are poppies. On a dry day, collect the seed by snipping off the seed head and shaking them in a paper bag. Pop in an envelope and label with the name of the plant and simple instructions for planting (if you know them). Maybe decorate the envelope too! Then simply hang up somewhere public with a note so that people know they can take them.
